On February 26, a hose failure at the Louisiana Offshore Oil Port (LOOP) caused more than 31,000 gallons of crude oil to leak into the Gulf, causing an oily sheen to reach Terrebonne Parish. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries closed oyster harvesting beds in the region. While the region's oyster industry is at a standstill, other fishermen and docks are in limbo. Councilwoman Kimberly Chauvin met with the response team responsible for cleaning up the spill, which she says could not provide an estimate for when the oil will be cleaned up and any seafood testing will take at least two weeks. While Chauvin has pledged to improve communication between the public and the public, there is growing reluctance among local and national vendors to purchase seafood from the region, and others considering possible legal action against the spill.
