Loyola University Chicago student Sheridan Gorman was murdered on March 19, with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) accusing Jose Medina-Medina, a Venezuelan criminal illegal alien, of wearing a mask and shooting Gorman as she attempted to flee. The Loyola Phoenix, a student-run newspaper, has apologized for using the term "illegal immigrant" in its article, which was taken down minutes later to prevent further harm. The paper's editor's note stated that the language was inconsistent with Associated Press style and did not align with the paper's values. The Associated Press has issued an alternate term for immigration, stating that while many immigrants have some legal documents, it is not necessary to use such terms.
