Heavy rain has caused flooding across New Zealand's North Island as Cyclone Vaianu makes landfall. A state of emergency was declared in several regions, including Whakatane, Hawke’s Bay, and Waikato. The MetService predicts that the storm will move south over the Bay of Plenty on Sunday afternoon and pass west of the Chatham Islands on Monday morning.
