The American right is using the holy month of Ramadan as a vehicle for anti-Muslim rhetoric, particularly in response to a violent rally outside the home of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The event, which was attended by Jake Lang, a convicted insurrectionist who promised to burn a Quran, sparked controversy when two men allegedly hurled improvised explosive devices (IEDs) into the crowd. The New York Times and other media outlets quickly suggested that the mayor’s response to the Islamophobia driving the rally was suspect. Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., who represents a Muslim community in his district, suggested that Mammani should be deported and suggested that Muslims don't belong in American society. Ogles has previously proposed a bill to ban immigration by Muslims and has previously urged the Justice Department to investigate whether Mamdagnani could be stripped of his citizenship through denaturalization. The Islamophobia of Islam is now being openly embraced in the GOP, with nearly 100 Republican members of Congress posting negative comments about Islam or Muslims this year alone.
