Sarah Michelle Gellar's reboot of Buffy: New Sunnydale, starring Gellar and Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao, was abruptly discarded by Hulu. The original pilot was not perfect, but received a well-received rewrite with more Buffy Summers in it. Despite this, Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich, who oversees Hulu Originals, informed the project's producers and creative team that the project was not moving forward. The timing of the decision to discontinue the pilot could not have been better as Gellar was attending SXSX for the premiere of her new movie, Ready or Not 2, and Zhao was attending Oscar weekend events leading to the Oscars. The cancellation of the pilot was described as "misguided" and "terrible".
