Andre De Shields, known for his distinctive performance in Broadway's "The Wiz" and "Hadestown," has undergone a late-career renaissance and is currently performing eight times a week as Old Deuteronomy in "Cats: The Jellicle Ball." The production is a reimagining of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical through the lens of ballroom culture, a Black and Latino LGBTQ+ underground subculture. De Shields expressed his excitement about the production, which includes ballroom cultures that have traditionally been marginalized, pushed to the edges of society, and were seen as counterculture. He also expressed his desire to bring these communities to Broadway, a place where people come to find out the latest trend and fashion trends.
