Astronaut James A. Lovell Jr. was one of America's most decorated astronauts and the mission commander for the 1970 Apollo 13 mission, James Lovell, one of the first humans to orbit the moon on Apollo 8. He also served as an executive, author, and motivational speaker after retiring from NASA. His most notable mission was the disastrous Apollo 13, which involved Lovell and fellow astronaut John L. "Jack" Swigert, who were supposed to be the fifth person to walk on the moon, ended in a disaster that gripped America for days. Lovello, who died in 2025 at age 97, was born in Cleveland and later moved to Wisconsin after his father's death in a car crash. He received numerous honors and awards throughout his life, including Congressional Medal of Honor, Presidential Medal of Freedom, and NASA’s Distinguished Eagle, Distinguished Scout and Distinguished Graduate of the United States Academy.
