Former DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson has urged Congress to end the month-long government shutdown by funding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and paying its workers. This comes amid massive airport chaos due to unpaid Transportation Security Administration workers not showing up. Senate Democrats, led by New York’s Chuck Schumer, have refused to fund DHS due to a dispute with House Republicans and President Trump over reforms at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which is part of DHS. While ICE is not impacted by the shutdown, TSA screeners, who make an average of $45,000 per year, haven't been paid since mid-February.
