The proposed East Bay AI data center was not approved for zoning by the Provo City Council, which voted unanimously not to approve the change. The proposed ordinance would have added the city’s new data center overlay zone to 1507 S 180 E, creating a planned industrial commercial data center zone. This project from B+F Timpanogos was the first to apply for this zone overlay. The data center would power itself only from the city electric grid, using a closed-loop water system, capped at 4,380,000 gallons per year. Concerns were raised about the potential impact of the data center on electricity usage and the potential cost of electricity for Provo residents. The council voted unanimously (7-0) against approving the ordinance.
