New York Yankees pitcher Carlos Lagrange has partnered with San Diego-based start-up Finlete, which allows fans to invest in player's potential future earnings. If a Finlete player makes the major league salary, investors can make money. Investments start at $300 and larger sums come with perks such as signed memorabilia, VIP experiences and virtual meet and greets with the athlete. Finlete is built on “athlete-first economics” and aims to shift career risk away from athletes to investors. While some in the Yankees organization have expressed skepticism about Lagrange’s partnership, Finlete limits how many shares each player can have and how much future earnings a player would have to repay. If Lagrange makes $13 million in his career, he would have needed to pay $97,000 back to investors, which would result in a loss of more than 14 times the total investment.
