McCaughey: Don’t count ballots after Election Day

The U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments in Watson v. Republican National Committee, challenging a Mississippi law that allows mail-in ballots received after Election Day to be counted. Mississippi is one of 14 states, including California and New York, that allows a post-Election Day "grace period" for ballots to be returned. The RNC argues that this decision is a states' right to decide when ballots must arrive, but the Constitution allows Congress to set the date. The court's decision on this issue could potentially impact November's midterms. However, Democrats argue that striking down this grace period would create chaos.
