Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Sen. Rand Paul (r-Ky.) voted against a budget resolution that could set the stage for ending the two-month shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security. Murkowski, a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, objected to the resolution because it would allow for a budget reconciliation package to fund Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol for three and a half years, which would effectively remove these agencies from the annual congressional appropriations process. Paul voted against the resolution, raising concerns about spending another $70 billion on the agencies still sitting on over $100 billion in unobligated funding from last year's One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The budget resolution still has enough votes to be adopted, but it may require further votes to ensure its passage.
