Indiana Gov. Mike Braun has signed a bill, House Enrolled Act 1001, aimed at addressing affordable housing costs. The law restricts local government units' ability to impose and increase fees related to building approval and permits, and addresses long permitting processes, zoning restrictions, and minimum parking requirements. It also gives local governments the option to opt out of many provisions of the bill to address increasing construction costs. After signing the bill, Braun stated that affordability was his administration's top priority. The bill author, State Rep. Doug Miller, said the initial intent was to address property rights and developmental rights to ensure that people who want to move out of their homes can have places to move.
