Gov. Tim Walz has suggested that legislators' emails should be subject to the state's open records law, as he is under scrutiny over his administration's handling of Medicaid fraud. Walz argues that this transparency would allow people to see who lawmakers are communicating with, potentially influencing their work. However, resistance to this idea is longstanding and bipartisan. There are no bills on this topic before the Legislature this year and Walz's proposal has not yet been supported. The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press suggests that access to these records can provide insight into lawmakers’ deals and negotiations or interactions with lobbyists who may influence their votes.
