Austin councilmember Mike Siegel introduced a resolution creating a “Safe to Call” working group to create policies that ensure the safety and protection of vulnerable individuals when they call 911. The working group would protect 911 callers from arrest if they have outstanding warrants for misdemeanor or non-criminal warrants, such as unpaid fees and unresolved traffic citations. It would prevent police from detaining a 911 caller for civil administrative warrants from ICE. The resolution was passed by several advocacy groups, including Grassroots Leadership, Workers Defense Action Fund, ACLU Texas, and the Texas Civil Rights Project. The goal is to ensure that vulnerable community members feel safe to call 911 when they need help.
