Dedicated TWRA funding would protect Tennessee wildlife

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) is being considered for dedicated funding using existing state revenues. Currently, 81% of the agency's budget comes from hunting and fishing license fees and federal excise taxes. Legislation currently under consideration would use these funds to support Tennessee's fish and wildlife management. The TWRA's core operating costs have increased recently, while revenues have failed to keep up. Since 2015, inflation has driven up costs by 30%. The agency has also been saddled with $18.5 million in unfunded mandates. W. Laird Hamberlin, CEO of Safari Club International, argues that funding for the TWRA would support one of Tennessee's strongest economic engines, protect the state's thriving wildlife ecosystem and allow future generations to access to hunting, fishing.
