Albuquerque, New Mexico, has been rethinking its recycling strategy after a decade of requests for glass to be added to its "blue bin" curbside recycling. However, a midyear fiscal report revealed that the city's efforts to expand glass recycling fell short due to staffing and equipment shortages. The Solid Waste Management Department launched a twice-month pilot program at two sites in August, but found it was not feasible due to low participation, weak demand, and a shortage of CDL-certified drivers and equipment. The pilot program was shut down in March to better use its resources. Instead of scrapping glass recycling, the city is focusing on permanent drop-off bins to keep glass out of landfills. The city is expanding its “Recycle Right” campaign, a three-year effort with the city’s tourism department and the Resource Recovery Bureau, to reach more residents during Earth Month.
