South Korea's National Tax Service has lost a large portion of its confiscated crypto assets, which were used to aid in recovery of high-value tax evaders. The seizure was made through a press release featuring photos of Ledger hardware wallets taken into custody and notes displaying the wallet seed phrases. These were removed from the press, which allowed anyone to access these devices without the need for offline storage. The theft could have been carried out by anyone with the knowledge of these phrases. This incident shows a lack of understanding of virtual assets and costs the national treasury billions in Korean won. This is not the first time a mishap has occurred with crypto funds seized by South Korea.
