Why Princess Charlotte Will Never Be Your Average Spare Heir

Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana of Wales, currently third in line to the British throne, has been described as a "spare heir" by her great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II, who changed the line of succession rules in 2013 to include younger brothers and male first cousins. She will descend the ladder when her older brother Prince George, or their uncle Prince Harry, has children. Despite her unusual status, Charlotte maintains her place in the pecking order while enjoying being a kid. Her parents, William and Kate Middleton, have been tasked with ensuring the British royal family is ahead of the times and ensuring that their children stay up with the times. The term, coined by Consuelo Vanderbilt in the late 1800s, dates back to when her two children with the 9th Duke of Marlborough were described as "the heir and the spare."
