Camp Scrubs in Hampton Roads, a free program aimed at high school students, has exposed students to hands-on experiences across several healthcare roles. The students used real medical supplies to simulate injections and intravenous placements, performed ultrasounds on a frozen chicken, and received CPR and basic first aid training. The program was started by Leanne Shelton, Bon Secours Hampton Roads director of nursing practice, who wanted to expand it to cover all health levels and to cover entry level roles up to higher levels. The Camp Scrub aims to build trust in healthcare and promote health and well-being. Some students expressed their interest in healthcare because they have family members in the medical field and others want to help others in the same way as disabled family members.
