Author Sarah Kohn has been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) after developing an eating disorder and being diagnosed with bulimia at 14 and a suicide attempt at 21. Kohn developed BPD when he was 21, a diagnosis which was surprising as her mother had also been diagnosed earlier. She had been in and out of hospital throughout her teenage years struggling with substance use, self-harm, and attempted suicide multiple times. Despite her diagnosis, Kohn struggled to connect to her emotions and communicate with others. Despite this, she believes that the stigma surrounding mental health, particularly conditions such as BPD, has led to increased understanding and understanding of mental health issues. Despite these changes, the stigma around mental health continues to persist, with some believing that we are acting out of pain rather than malice.
