A rural Wisconsin town of Cassville has voted to ban a massive data center plan by an anonymous developer, despite promises of 50 jobs and $5.5 million in annual property tax revenue from the project, leading to the loss of about 500 acres of Wisconsin's Driftless area. The vote, which was unanimous, reflected a backlash against large tech companies expanding into rural spaces. The new ordinance prohibits data centers in the town for up to two years and prevents land-use changes without approval. It is part of a larger effort by a Midwestern community to protect the qualities that make life appealing to people and data centers. The project has been shrouded in secrecy and is being considered by Ron Brisbois, executive director of the Grant County Economic Development Corp., who estimates it would require 400 to 500 megawatts of power.
