The FBI has reported that high-tech heists are increasing in North Carolina and across the country, with the number of victims and the amount of money lost. The rise in cybercrime is attributed to professionals with advanced knowledge of the scam. The Department of Justice has seized nearly $2.5 billion in crypto linked to cybercrimes in fiscal year 2025, ten times the amount seized five years ago. North Carolinians fell victim to cyber investment scams the most, with 178 complaints. James Kaylor, a Supervisory Agent with the FBI, said that crypto is the currency of choice for criminals due to its ability to move quickly and easily. Kaylor also highlighted the difficulty of finding out who the money belongs to due to multiple victims.
