Leaders from Google, Meta, Microsoft, Oracle, OpenAI, Amazon, and xAI have signed a pledge signed by President Donald Trump to prevent electricity costs from increasing around data centers. The pledge is part of a broader effort to address growing bipartisan concerns about rising electricity rates as tech companies rush to build out a new generation of AI data centers, which require electricity to train and run generative AI models. The companies will contribute back up power to local grids during times of need, which could help prevent power outages during disasters. However, they will still need to negotiate agreements with utilities and state governments to avoid increasing electricity costs. The move comes as tech firms face opposition to data centers that require significant electricity usage, which rose 13% nationally in 2025 and could double or triple by 2028.
