The Vatican has launched a project to encourage disinvestment from the mining sector, urging companies to treat their workers justly and protect the local environment near their operations. The initiative is supported by senior Church leaders and about 40 other faith-based institutions. The Vatican has previously urged Catholics to disinvest from the armaments and fossil fuel industries in 2020. It did not specify any mining companies that could be targeted. The project aims to make governments and business leaders understand that what is legal does not always align with the value of justice.
