Mamma mia! ‘Record’ number of Marios swarm Midtown to celebrate beloved Nintendo character

A record-breaking event was held at the Union Square GameStop store in Midtown to celebrate Nintendo’s “Mario Day” and celebrate the character. The largest gathering ever of fans dressed as the Nintendo video game character, with 270 participants participating. The event was also offered a $5 voucher and a chance to win a Nintendo Switch for showing up at the event. The Guinness World Record was set in 2010, but there was no official record from the organization. Participants included Ross Martinez, who dressed as an all-gold version of Mario from New Super Mario Bros. 2, and Cristopher Peralta, who spent over 12 hours making a giant paper Mario head for the occasion.
