Tampa Bay Lightning lost Game 1 of the Stanley Cup playoffs to the Montreal Canadiens, with coach Jon Cooper stating there was too much "stupidity" in penalties. The loss, which led to a hat trick from Montreal's Juraj Slafkovsky, resulted in a 4-3 win for the Canadiens. The Lightning had the third-best penalty kill in the regular season but only the 15th-best since February's Olympic break (79.8%) in the game. Cooper acknowledged the difficulty of the penalty kill but said it was more about the number of penalties than its failure to prevent goals.
