Transit officials in New York and New Jersey have warned commuters to work from home during the World Cup, citing the expected travel chaos. The Port Authority Executive Director, Kathryn Garcia, stated that if not attending any of the events, commuters should stay home. This comes as transit officials are preparing for an anticipated surge in ridership. The World Cup matches for June 22 and 30 are also expected to cause disruption as they overlap with rush hour. New Jersey officials anticipate that around 40,000 fans will use mass transit for each match. The NJ Transit section of Penn Station is expected to be closed to anyone not attending the event four hours before each game.
