The first day of the Class 5A state baseball tournament saw several upsets, including victories for Rio Rancho, Cleveland, No. 2 Cleveland, La Cueva, and No. 4 Piedra Vista. No. 5 Centennial was defeated 1-0 by No. 12 Las Cruces. The top-seeded Rams won 14-0 over No. 16 seed Atrisco Heritage, while No. 6 Carlsbad, No 7 Eldorado and No 8 Mayfield also won. In Class 4A, No 5 Albuquerque Academy and No 6 Hope Christian won their first games. All three teams advanced to the quarterfinals of the Week 2 games.
