The SAFE Bet Act, a bill introduced last year, aims to regulate online sports betting by banning gambling advertisements during live sporting events and preventing sportsbook operators from enticing people to bet through promotions. The bill stalled in the House and its future is uncertain. Online sports betting is a growing public health problem, with addiction to depression, mood and anxiety disorders and lead to poor work performance and self-esteem. The rise in sports betting has been linked to a 20 percent increase in binge drinking. Two of the largest online gaming companies, FanDuel and DraftKings, have spent significant sums on state lobbying and advertising to expand their reach and engage new customers.
