The cancellation of Buffy: New Sunnydale, the reboot of Sarah Michelle Gellar's series, has raised concerns for Buffy fans. The reason for the cancellation was reportedly due to an executive who was not a fan of the original show. Chloé Zhao, a longtime Buffy fan, was on the executive team and directed the pilot. The pilot was deemed "unsalvageable" and "not good enough" to turn things around, according to Variety. The original script for the pilot did not feature more than a glimpse of Gellar’s Buffy Summers, but instead focused on a younger Slayer character played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong. Hulu also reportedly took issue with Zhao’s direction, which was understated. Disney has begun doing damage control following the cancellation.
