Meet the new ACLU-NJ advocacy director shaping N.J.’s civil rights agenda

John Butler, the new director of political advocacy at the ACLU-NJ, has been tasked with steering New Jersey's civil rights agenda. Butler, who is married and the father of a seven-year-old son, has a personal commitment to civil rights and his commitment to his family. He also serves as judge at Montclair High School's "We the People" constitutional competition. Butler's role in the ACLU is to set a bold policy and political agenda to deliver even more civil rights victories. His focus is on engaging in real-world policy and ensuring that policy translates into effective impact on real and real life. He shares his experiences from Gov. Phil Murphy's administration, which informs his approach, and plans to build a "Firewall for Freedom" for New Jersey.
