The Brooklyn Park Police Department in Minnesota has introduced a new artificial intelligence software that can rapidly process digital evidence in child exploitation and violent crime cases, cutting case times from weeks to hours. The software scans thousands of images at once and can surface visually similar to weapons, faces, backgrounds or potential victims. It can also categorize images that haven't been reviewed yet and categorize them for child exploitation cases. The new system has been used in about 10 cases so far, half involving violent weapon crimes and half crimes against children. The speed of the technology could impact child safety, charging decisions and whether victims are protected from further harm. The tool has also reopened stalled weapons cases, uncovered illegal machine‑gun parts, geolocation data and additional suspects.
