Rivian and Uber have announced a $1.25 billion investment from the company to Rivian, with $300 million committed pending approval. The deal allows for thousands of fully autonomous Rivian R2 SUVs to be distributed for Uber in 2028, with plans to initially deploy 10,000 robotaxis in San Francisco and Miami, with options to scale to 50,000 by 2030 or 2031. The partnership allows Rivian to gather massive data on battery life, handling in traffic, and software reliability. Consumer deliveries of the R2 are set to begin this spring, starting with the Performance trim at $57,990 and more affordable versions at $53,990. The R2 is designed from the ground up for both consumer use and fleet duty, sharing the same battery architecture, motors, and sensors as well as those from Waymo. This partnership signals Rivian is building for the long haul, not just selling a few thousand trucks. It also gives Rivian serious funding to ramp up production and refine the platform, making owning one more straightforward and supported over time. The compact-to-midsize electric SUV space offers unique features like integrated tow hooks and higher ground clearance for light off-road capability.
