Mexican Attorney General Ernestina Godoy has proposed a new anti-femicide law, which aims to standardize femicide classifications and punishments across the country. The law would impose a maximum of 40-70 years in prison for femicide, with a minimum of 20 years for attempts. All Attorney General’s offices would be required to investigate every violent death of a woman or girl under the femicide hypothesis. The bill also aims to establish uniform investigations and standardize “investigation protocols” in cases of femicide across Mexico. President Claudia Sheinbaum acknowledged that her “Plan B” electoral reform bill may not pass Congress due to opposition from the Labor Party (PT). However, she did not rule out a “plan C’ electoral reform proposal. Brazil's President Lula da Silva has reportedly proposed a joint venture between the two state oil giants to explore deepwater oil in the Gulf of Mexico.
