The current system of property tax assessments in Colorado is an onerous one, with the burden of Colorado’s property taxes on homeowners increasing exponentially. This increases the ability to purchase a home and maintain a reasonable standard of living. The government has the power to reduce the tax burden, but is reluctant to address this issue. A citizens’ initiative to freeze property taxes was removed due to political pressure and the lack of termability of its sponsors. The Lincoln Institute of Land Policy provides resources to understand property taxes and how to reduce mill levy when property valuations go up. The only solution to this issue is to address citizen initiative or constitutional amendments submitted directly to the voters.
