State Sen. Paul Sarlo has proposed Bill S4111, which would increase the sales tax in the Meadowlands district to 9.625 percent during the period of June 12 - July 21, when the FIFA World Cup games are being played at MetLife stadium. The bill would also add 2.5 percent to the hotel/motel tax in Meadowlands and add a 50-cent fee to all taxi, Uber and Lyft rides in the area. Critics argue that this increases the World Cup's costs and undermines the purpose of attracting visitors and small businesses to the area, as well as potential increases in hotel prices. The proposed tax increase is part of budget negotiations currently in Trenton, but it remains uncertain if it will actually happen. If it becomes law, residents and business owners can apply for a tax credit next year when filing their taxes.
