Asking Eric: Their constant cheerleading is very frustrating

A man with a variety of orthopedic issues, including a cane, a walker or wheelchair, has become frustrated by constant cheerleading from strangers who are helping with his recovery from new hips and knees. He finds this support frustrating as it reminds him that he is not going to get well, not the ones they did. The author suggests that if these people are regularly supportive of his use of assistive devices, it may be helpful to redirect people who comment on our bodies or abilities, as long as they are, it could facilitate a better relationship. A recent dispute with a recently married daughter about her husband and mother-in-law, who seem out to disenfranchise me, may be a good solution. However, separate strategies may be necessary for separate relationships.
