Finnish startup Donut Lab's solid-state battery can handle extreme heat, according to a test conducted by state-owned VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. The team tested the battery at three temperatures, 20C at room temperature, 80C at 80C, and 100C at 100C. The results showed that the battery could still discharge energy under conditions of up to 100 degrees Celsius (212 degrees Fahrenheit), and actually gain capacity. However, the test did not address the issue of a potential "deterioration" caused by the liquid electrolytes, which can cause electrical shorts or potentially cause overheating. The company hopes to replace flammable liquid with a solid ceramic or polymer material to improve battery's tolerance to extreme heat.
