A group of women, led by the founders of Midi Health, the largest provider of menopause care in the US, is meeting with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to discuss the shortage of estrogen patches. The patches have been in short supply since the start of the year and the FDA has been working with the five largest patch manufacturers to ensure all companies are operating at capacity. Almost half of all women on hormone replacement therapy are having difficulty filling their estrogen patch prescriptions, according to a recent survey by Midi. The shortage is affecting their health, with one in 10 women saying it caused them to stop treatment and nine in 10 were unsure they could fill their next prescription. Some drug manufacturers have blamed the shortage on increased use of the patches since the FDA removed its black-box warning label last fall.
