Disney-owned ABC has accused the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) of violating its First Amendment rights by investigating The View for violating the "equal time" rule, which requires radio and TV broadcasters to provide competing political candidates with equal access and time. ABC argues that The View was given an exemption from the equal time rule more than twenty years ago due to its being a news interview program. The company argues that this action will chill core First Amendment-protected speech for years and potentially decades. The FCC has also indicated it plans to more broadly revoke the exemptions granted to other daytime and late-night talk shows. Disney-owned stations in eight different markets have been ordered to renew their broadcast licenses by May 28th even though they were originally scheduled to do so until 2028.
