John Deere has settled a lawsuit brought by the U.S. over the right-to-repair practices, settling for $99 million in damages. The settlement will cover eligible plaintiffs who paid for repairs to large agricultural equipment from January 2018. In the settlement, Deere will make available to farmers for 10 years the digital tools required for maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of large agricultural vehicles. The case is part of broader scrutiny over the issue of companies controlling access to repair tools and software. Deere is also facing a separate lawsuit by the Federal Trade Commission, accusing them of forcing farmers to use its authorized dealer network and increasing their costs by delaying their access to parts and repairs.
