The attempted murder trial of Maui anesthesiologist Gerhardt Konig, who is accused of attacking his wife, Arielle, during a birthday hike on Oahu's Pali Puka Trail in March, began this week. Prosecutors and defense attorneys presented conflicting accounts of the violent incident. Prosecutors claim Konig tried to push his wife off the trail, attempted to stab her with a syringe, and hit her multiple times with a jagged rock. However, defense attorney Thomas Otake claims that Arielle Konig attacked first and that Gerhard Konig felt a shove and thought she tried to shove him off. The trial is expected to last until mid-April.
