The Boston Red Sox defeated the Padres 5-2 in the first game of 2026 at Fenway Park, with two home runs by Willson Contreras off Michael King and by Marcelo Mayer against Wandy Peralta. The win stops the Red Sox's losing streak at five games and prevents the Padres from winning two consecutive games. The Padres overcame their first deficit of the season, but the deficit reappeared when their starting pitcher faded. The Red Sox and the Padres are currently 2-5.
