Iran has threatened to escalate strikes on energy infrastructure and target critical water desalination facilities if President Donald Trump does not reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical trade route. The Iranian government has effectively blocked the strait since the U.S. and Israel launched their attacks on Iran on February 28, sparking retaliation and triggering a wider war in the region. Trump has given Tehran a 48-hour deadline to reopen the crucial trade route, through which around 20% of the world's oil passes. Tehran has also threatened to strike US and Israeli infrastructure in response to any attack on its power plants. Observers suggest that military action against Iran would not significantly impact oil markets or pricing.
