A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Cumberland and Salem counties in effect until 8:45 p.m. on Wednesday, with quarter-sized hail and damaging winds expected to hit the area. The National Weather Service warned that a severe storm was located near Woodland Beach, or 13 miles west of Bridgeton, moving northeast at 25 mph. Potential damage to vehicles is possible, and minor damage to roofs, siding, trees, and power lines is also possible. The warning also highlighted frequent cloud to ground lightning occurring during the storm. Lightning strikes the United States approximately 25 million times each year, mostly during the summer, killing about 20 people per year. To protect during a thunderstorm, take these steps: Avoid open fields, hilltops, or ridge crests, avoid tall trees, stay close to lower stands of trees, avoid unnecessary lighting, and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities.
