Massive Attack's third album, Mezzanine, was released on April 20, 1998. The album was criticized for its lacklustre performance and was No. 1 on the U.K. Albums Chart. The recording process was fraught with internal conflict, with Robert "3D" Del Naja initially pitched the album idea in 1997, but the move towards a darker sound led to tensions within the group. Andrew "Mushroom" Vowles disagreed with the aesthetic change, but Grant "Daddy G" Marshall was on board. The chaotic recording process almost led to the demise of the entire group. Despite these challenges, Mezanine remains a significant entry in the trip-hop archives.
