The world added 692 gigawatts (GW) of renewable power in 2025, pushing total global capacity to 5,149 GW, according to a report from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). This is a 15.5% jump in just one year, and renewables accounted for 85.6% of all new power capacity added globally. This surge is occurring at a time when energy security is at a premium due to rising geopolitical tensions. Solar and wind were the dominant technologies in the growth, adding 511 GW or about three-quarters of the total new renewable capacity. However, not all regions are benefiting equally, with Asia accounting for 74.2% of new capacity and Africa posting its fastest growth yet at 11.3 GW.
