Steven Leifman, a judge and finance chair of the Homeless Trust in Miami-Dade County, has been advocating for a new Mental Health Center to treat individuals with severe mental health illnesses in order to keep them off the street and out of jail. He has secured funds including opioid settlement dollars, and a location at 2200 NW 74th Ave., in Miami. However, during a meeting, an agenda item sponsored by District 7 County Commissioner Raquel Regalado didn't make it out of committee. Some commissioners were concerned about the long-term costs of the facility once its funding is exhausted. Leiferman remains committed to the project, arguing that it should go before the full Board of County Commission.
