The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Minnesota Safety Council are leading efforts to prevent distracted driving from becoming a habit of holding devices while driving, which led to 21 deaths and 159 serious injuries in Minnesota last year. The Department of Public Safety (DPS) and National Highway Transportation Safety Administration are leading campaigns to encourage drivers to put down their phones and focus on the road. The NHTSA has produced 30-second spots as part of its "Put the Phone Away Or Pay" distracted driving awareness campaign. Last year, 21 people died on Minnesota roads in crashes attributed to distracted driving, including Linda Rodenberg Davis who was hit by a teen driver while on his phone. The Safety Council's new "Someone Is Waiting for You" campaign encourages drivers to consider the possibility of losing their loved ones in a distracted driving crash. The National Highway Safety Safety Administration is also participating in a similar campaign, which includes 30 second TV spots in English and Spanish.
